Hanging Staircase

The apartment is located on the ground and the first floor of the 17th century ‘pakhuize’ - warehouse. An historicist interior (done in 1970) was stripped down to return the original strong pragmatic space. This typology is characterised with deep floorplans, sturdy structure to hold the stored goods (with many visible wood beams), large delivery doors on the front and two small windows on the sides. The main challenge is to bring the light into the middle of the apartment. Main feature of the intervention is light hanging steel staircase along a 6m high bookshelf to fit (a part of) the client’s books.
