Bustan Cairo
Bustan is community garden situated in heritage courtyard of the Beyt Yakan
(the House of Yakan) in Fatimid, Cairo. Co-created with the local community
who are it’s caretakers, the garden contains drought resistant, edible and
medicinal plants and can be used for talks and knowledge exchange. Simultaneously
it serves as the orchard to disseminate the seedlings for the pocket or
balcony gardens throughout the neighbourhood. Bustan is also the traditional
and sustainable architectural typology of two courtyards creating a ‘chimney effect’
and a cooler microclimate characteristic for the Egyptian climate.
